When you buy Photoshop CS4 with Lightroom 2 at a great price of $100.00 you will get the speed you are looking for and see major improvements. I assume that CS3 and CS4 has improvements that make it at least equally as fast as PSE6, but after this little bit of testing, I think I'll actually "upgrade" to PSE6 rather than to CS4, and I'll be saving both money and - more importantly - a lot of time since I don't need to wait around so long for many of those filter processes that I have started using regularly. I assume that process is also limited a bit by the graphics processor, but still, the result is significant. In addition, I ran the Flood filter, PSE6 clocked in at 1:51 and CS2 at 3:33. I did the same thing in CS2 with the exact same settings, and it came to 7 minutes 16 seconds. Okay, it was such a short processing thing I'd have to try something that took longer to compare, so I did a Lunar Cell planet rendering on a 5000x5000 image, and it came to 1 minute 59 seconds sharp on PSE6. I was wondering whether there were any speed differences between the two pieces of software, and so I took the same image, applied the same gaussian blur to them and timed it: CS2 came to 10 seconds, PSE6 to 13 seconds. I naturally noticed that processing of some of those filters took its time in CS2, and I had heard that CS2 didn't really use the full processing power of dual or quad core processors, and so, I started trying out Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac yesterday (will Elements 7 appear for Mac soon, I wonder?), and I found that with the addition of an easily downloadable thing that adds the layer mask feature, the only things missing from PSE6 that I have used in CS2 is RGB to CMYK conversion (I have used that once, 5 years ago, but when you need it, it is nice to have), and snap to layers - which is convenient, but not something I simply have to have. Then, in June, I started playing around with Flaming Pear's Flexify plugin, and more recently, their plugins called Flood, Indian Ink, Lunar Cell, as well as general work with layers, gradients, etc - and on images that tend to be up to around 10000x8000 pixels big. I have been using the veritably ancient CS2 on my iMac, and until recently, I didn't think too much about its speed, since I mainly used it as the program I print from.
